happy friday!

not really much going on this week, but the tulips in our neighborhood have just started to bloom and theyā€™re absolutely gorgeous. iā€™m so sad that i canā€™t enjoy them for very long, but at the same time, i think maybe i wouldnā€™t notice them as much if i were still living life as usual. thatā€™s really the silver lining that weā€™re always searching for nowadays; you appreciate the tiny things much more.

also, HAPPY (BELATED) 24TH BIRTHDAY BRITT!! šŸŽ‰ sorry you have to spend it in quarantine but hope you had cake to make up for it.

five things i loved this week:

  • merch aid (the project of an agency i really like called r/ga; they sourced collaborations between local artists and nyc restaurants that have closed or had to ā€œsignificantly alter their business modelsā€ and created exclusive drops of t-shirts and tote bags. 100% of the proceeds go to the businesses, so i thought it was a great way to support local, and as a bonus, the designs are so cute! i got a felicia liang x jing fong t-shirt and iā€™m really excited about it)

  • about time netflix (i canā€™t remember exactly when or why i decided to watch this years ago, but i just remember it being the perfect rom-com. itā€™s definitely in my top threeā€”how to lose a guy in 10 days and to all the boys iā€™ve loved before are up there tooā€”and in my opinion itā€™s extremely underrated. i love that unlike most rom-coms thereā€™s no witty banter or fantastic tension between the leads; itā€™s about a very ordinary guy with a very ordinary life, but itā€™s so sweet and so wholesome and so precious that it really allows you to appreciate the small nuances of ordinary life. i think it resonates now more than ever, since so much of what constitutes ā€œnormalā€ life has been stripped away and weā€™re left only with the people we love and the little rituals of living one day at a time)

  • this tiktok that iā€™ve watched around 6,000 times now (also, i finally finished my tiktok deck that i started like six months ago...i pitched it to my boss as ā€œan exploration of tiktokā€™s origins and its relevance to the gen z demographic,ā€ so enjoy)

  • shockingly easy no-knead focaccia from bon appĆ©tit (can confirm it was shockingly easy; it just takes a lot of time to rest, but it is so delicious and worth it, i promise)

five things i read this week:

  • public shaming has only just begun, medium (while the court of public opinion is definitely not the most empathetic or necessarily correct method of delivering justice/calling out wrongdoers, iā€™m a strong advocate of public shaming as a social function; i think itā€™s useful because many people donā€™t respond to anything but shame, e.g. billionaires and politicians)

  • prepare for the ultimate gaslighting, medium (i thought this raised some very good but terrifying points about the inevitable desperation for a return to normalcy post-pandemic, and the ways in which we unwittingly contribute to that same system of gaslighting. terrifying, because history only repeats what weā€™ve forgotten, and my biggest fear is that people saying ā€œwhat were we so worried about? this was all an overreactionā€ when in fact it was our prescience and diligence that saved us. what really resonated with me was his advice to be very intentional with what we let back into our lives and to create a new version of normal, ā€œto only bring back what works for us, what makes our lives richer, what makes our kids happier, what makes us truly proud.ā€)

  • our health is in danger. wellness wants to fill the void., the new york times (of course, this is relevant now more than ever, but i have an endless grotesque fascination with the wellness movement, most notably how it began as an act of political welfare to protest the treatment of systemic oppression against marginalized people, Ć  la audre lorde, but it has been co-opted by influencers to be an aspirational status symbol)
