t h o u g h t s & m u s i n g s

hällo friends,

this was a very lazy week, even more than it normally is. i think i finally felt the exhaustion of being cooped up for a month. we did absolutely nothing last sunday but lie around on the couch; i felt like such a sloth. it’s to be expected; i just think we’re always going to have on days and off days, and having a whole week of them was annoying.

five things i loved this week:

  • teens on tiktok doing their makeup to john mulaney bits (okay, this is a perfect example of how nonsensical tiktok trends are and how the most random things get really popular for no reason, and i love it; this is one of my favorite john mulaney bits and it’s so impressive that she does a full face of makeup while being so on beat?!)

  • hollywood on netflix (this is just the trailer, but this looks incredible—the costumes, the stories, the incredibly attractive actors...i’m really excited to watch this but i’m also a bit wary because i stopped watching american horror story because it always started out like a normal show and ended up going completely, insanely twisted so i’m wondering if this is going to be like that)

  • the manic pixie dream girl trope, explained, the take (this was such a thoughtful and refreshing deconstruction of both the trope and criticism of the trope; honestly, i highly recommend every single video on this channel)

  • coup (this is a game kevin’s friends taught me, and it’s so fun. it’s normally a card game but the online version is really well-designed, and it’s basically like if the card game bs had murder in it. you have two cards and your objective is to be the last man standing. you want to get to $7 to “coup” or murder each of your opponents, but you can only take the actions that your two cards dictate...or you can lie, but if you risk being called out and losing one of your cards. i’m obsessed. it gets a lot easier once you’re actually playing it. pro tip: always use the cheat sheet in the corner)

five things i read this week:

  • i don’t know how to tell this story, vulture (written by snl’s cecily strong about her cousin’s battle with brain cancer; it’s really beautifully written and is a perfect encapsulation of grief and loss of a loved one during a pandemic when everything else is collapsing)

  • the rise of the nursefluencer, vox (i could literally talk about influencers and ethics all day, but the idea of health influencers is particularly controversial. these are real health practitioners, and i can’t blame them for trying to gain a competitive advantage and build a personal brand, but also...it feels weird to be sold healthcare? but also, i guess that’s how capitalism and big pharma work anyway?)

  • cannabis justice by the numbers, ben & jerry’s (i’ve always loved ben & jerry’s ice cream but i am equally passionate about their commitment to social justice and civic engagement)
